Life-sized Gundame robot replica unveiled in Japan. The completed 18-metre-tall, life-size, functional recreation of the robot character Gundame from the 70’s sci-fi anime series has been unveiled to the media in Yokohama on Monday, November 30.
The robot cost a staggering $18m, weighs in excess of 25 tonnes and will feature as the centre piece of the brand new Gundam Factory Yokohama complex which is due to open to the public in December. The park was originally scheduled to open in October however had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
After the decision was taken to postpone the opening, park representatives issues a statement saying, “This decision was made to ensure the health and safety of our fans and employees in response to the worldwide spread of Covid-19,”.
“We apologise to all of our fans who were looking forward to our grand opening and ask for your understanding. In the meantime, we will be making preparations so that all of our visitors can enjoy themselves in safety.”
Members of the public will be able to make their way to an observation deck to get a closer look at various parts of the gigantic robot, which changes it position every 30 minutes for spectator enjoyment. There is even a virtual reality experience that puts members of the public in the position of sitting inside the cockpit of the gigantic robot, for an additional fee.
Both the theme park and the robot are part of the celebrations for the iconic Japanese anime’s 40th anniversary.
Fans of the multimillion-pound franchise which includes films, manga, plastic models and video games, will be queuing up to get as close a look as possible at this technological masterpiece.
