Hungarian MEP’s gay sex party attendance sees him arrested and fined

  • Anti-gay right-wing MEP found with his trouser down … literally

  • Arrested for attending gay sex party with over 20 others

  • Jozsef Szajer forced to resign from the party he helped found

Hungarian MEP’s gay sex party attendance goes against his own party beliefs as they actively push an extreme anti-LGBT agenda.

Hungarian MEP's gay sex Jozsef Szajer, 59, who is a founding member of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban’s, right-wing party was caught breaking the coronavirus curfew and social restrictions by attending a gay sex party above a gay bar in central Brussels.

Szajer injured himself trying to escape the event by jumping from a first-floor window when police raided the event however, he was arrested and detained along with 24 others and fined for breaking the coronavirus restrictions.

The hardline right-wing MEP has now resigned his position at the European Parliament and on Wednesday, December 2, quit as a member of Orban’s Fidesz party, after confirming his attendance at the event which took place on Friday, November 27.

Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, said of his resignation, “We will not forget nor repudiate his 30-years of work, but his deed is unacceptable and indefensible. Following this, he took the only appropriate decision when he apologised and resigned from his position as member of the European Parliament and left Fidesz,”

Hungarian MEP's gay sex In additional to attending the party, which goes against Belgian coronavirus rule which currently only allows close contact with one other person, Szajer was also discovered with drugs on him, however it has not been confirmed what type of narcotics he was carrying.

Szajer denied having taken narcotics and offered to take a drug test at the scene however police declined the offer handing out each participant with a 250€ fine each for breaching current regulations.

The party organiser, David Manzheley, a 29-year-old doctoral student told Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws, “I didn’t know this man [Szajer]. I didn’t know he was an MEP. At my parties I invite friends and they bring other friends.”

He continued, “To be honest, I don’t see the problem. There were two nurses there, and they didn’t think it was dangerous either,”

“We talk, we have a drink – just like at the cafe. The only difference is that in the meantime, we’re having sex with each other. I don’t see what’s wrong with that. We’re all adults, everything is by mutual consent,”

On Monday, November 30, Mr Szajer apologised for his participation at the event, stating, “I deeply regret violating the Covid restrictions, it was irresponsible on my part,”

Hungarian news outlets have reported the story however have left out any mention the Szajer was at a gay sex party rather just referring to it as a house party and they only give the rationale for his resignation as breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Furthermore, far-right allies of the Fidesz party and Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, have tried to claim that the event was a set-up by the German Secret Service in an attempt to undermine “the Hungarian-Polish war of independence in Brussels” as currently Hungary and Poland are in dispute with the EU over the budget of crisis management that has been set up to deal with the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Szajer has served alongside Orban in his party for four terms and was one of the founding members of the party, after which he moved onto the European Parliament as an MEP where he has served for 16 years.

His right-wing beliefs led him to push through anti-LGBT amendments to the Hungarian constitution including a statement which identifies that, “Hungary shall protect the institution of marriage as the union of a man and a woman.” This amendment has been used repeatedly in the Hungarian anti-LGBT movement to further restrict the rights of the community including a further constitutional amendment which restricts the adoption of children to heterosexual married couples only.

Aron Demeter, programme director at Amnesty International Hungary, told Euronews, “Szajer is probably most well-known in Hungary as one of the persons who drafted the constitution and actually the constitution is one of the central pieces in this story because first of all, in 2011 when it was drafted, it banned same-sex marriage. Or at least it said it was unconstitutional,”

“That this is something that Szajer affected and he is the most senior figure of the Fidesz government in Brussels, makes this story even more absurd,”

It remains to be seen what the extend of this scandal will be but it is clear that this will rock the ant-LGBT stance of the government. Furthermore, it must be questions whether the Prime Minister distancing himself from his former closest ally will be enough to dispel the political fallout of this issue.
